The History of Brandano Palace
BRANDANO, THE MADMAN OF CHRIST
Brandano, after whom the Hotel Palazzo Brandano is named, was called the Madman of Christ because of the fervour of his invectives and the harsh warnings he hurled at the powerful of the time.
Inside the village, a small terracotta statue displayed outdoors portrays Bartolomeo Carosi or Garosi known as Il Brandano, born in Petroio in 1486. According to tradition, blasphemy, gambling and carnal love were not lacking in his youth. One day, however, while he was hoeing his field, a splinter of stone struck him on the forehead and in one eye. Was this a divine signal to induce him to change his life? Since then, Bartholomew converted and devoted himself body and soul to preaching in Valdichiana.
Local folklore has an image of him as an eccentric spreader of faith who addressed the crowds holding a crucifix in one hand and a skull in the other, used to move from place to place barefoot and wearing a white tunic. It seems that he chose the nickname Brandanus for himself, because of the ‘great sword (i.e. broadsword) that God gave me to take back thieves and sinners of all kinds’.
If traces of the colourful rhyming prophecies attributed to him still remain in the popular sayings of the area, there are also many peculiar anecdotes linked to him. Such as the episode that sees him as the protagonist of a miraculous survival after being chained up, closed in a sack and abandoned in the waters of the Tiber by order of Pope Clement VII.
In the Buca del Romito, a cave in the woods not far from the village, the hermit of Petroio is also said to have spent periods of prayer and penance.
